`` The Cherubim And Seraphim Church ( C S ) Essay
Hermione Harris observes the Cherubim and Seraphim Church (CS), which were Aladura churches initiated by migrant generation of Yoruba in Britain. Harris emphasizes the significance of Yoruba practices in these churches and how religion is used to build a sense of community and network for this group of immigrants in country that is foreign to them. Throughout the book Harris pulls this thread of spirituality and spiritual power and their importance to the transformed religious ideas of this immigrant West African community in the CS. This study is distinguished from other studies, in itââ¬â¢s unique perspective, which Harris brings as both a participant and an observer in the CS services and congregations. What began as a PhD thesis in 1969, Harris has turned into a transformative study, also making this study unique among others. In the first chapter Harris explains how this study began in 1969, but was stopped for a few years, and resumed thirty years later. This is a significant factor in the unique perspective of this study because of the time gap between when the research was conducted, which is considered to be one of the strengths of the book because it reveals the developments made over time in the CS and how the congregation has progressed. In her years before the research was cut off, Harris was able to record and analyze 26 services, 2,000 revelations, and 678 visions.
